AG201 - Tips for Maintaining Your Vehicle

What are all the strange squeaks, grinding and knocking sounds that suddenly appear on your vehicle?  Should I be concerned?  What regular maintenance should I have on my vehicle?  Are you baffled by the diagnosis your car repair shop has just given you?  Are they ripping you off?  How do I pick an honest and reasonably priced maintenance and repair facility?  I have been told I must bring my car back to the dealership for maintenance and repair --- is that true?

 If you would like to know more, feel empowered when at your automotive maintenance and participate in the maintenance of your vehicle then this is the course for you.

Tips for Mainteance

This is what is included in this course:

·       What are the various parts of a vehicle?

  • The engine, Heating/Cooling Systems, Brakes, suspension, transmission, exhaust, electronics, tires
  • How do I know when one of these systems is not functioning properly?  And what do I need to do? 

·       Keeping the parts of your vehicle in safe and optimal operation

  •  When should I change the brakes? 
  • When should I replace the shocks and/or struts?
  • When should I change fluids, oils and filters?
  • What is the service maintenance schedule for my vehicle?
  •  Why do the vehicle manufacturers recommend regular maintenance?
  • Do I have to do that maintenance at the dealership?

·       What is a fair cost for maintenance services and vehicle repairs?

  • How warranties work
  • The dangers of buying my own parts and getting my neighbour to install them

·       What you should know about buying tires:

  •  When is the best time to buy tires?
  • What are all/season, all/weather, summer and winter tires?
  • What are run flat tires?
  • What are performance tires, low profile tires, trailer tires, and other types of tires?
  • What you should know about buying tires?
  • What is the difference between balancing tires and doing a wheel alignment?

·       When the dashboard warning lights come on, what should I do?

  • When is it safe to keep driving the vehicle, when is it not?

This is a hands on course so be sure to bring your vehicle.  You will be inspecting and changing the tires on your vehicle under the watchful eye of a tire specialist.  (Don’t worry if you don’t have a car yet, we will lend you one of ours to practice.)

Length: 1.5 to 2 hours

Location:  at a real garage

Dress code: where comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, kind of like a day in the garden.  A pair of slacks, a short sleeve polo or t-shirt and comfortable shoes would be perfect.

Date & Time:  TBD (but we do them on weekday evenings and weekend in the morning or afternoon.)
